Kora player Gordon Hellegers will join September 10 Song & Story Swap

Please come share in an evening of music and stories at the September Pioneer Valley Folklore Society SONG & STORY SWAP.

Friday, September 10, 7:30-9:30 p.m. at the Black Sheep Café, 79 Main St., Amherst, Mass.

Joining the Song & Story Swap as guest performer will be skilled player of the kora, Gordon Hellegers.

In the winter of 2000, Gordon Hellegers met Boubacar Diebate in Senegal, who began instructing him on the beautiful 21-string West African gourd-harp, called the kora. In a trip to Bamako, Mali, he was introduced to Boubacar's cousin, Toumani Diabate, widely acknowledged as one of the world's greatest kora masters. There he stayed in the Diebate family compound while building his own kora. In four short years Gordon has made astounding progress on the instrument, as can be heard on his first recording, KORA: Africa to America.

The warm-up theme this month is School.

Two fall house concert series scheduled

For many concertgoers the quiet intimacy of a music lover's living room is the perfect venue for a folk performance.  It may take a little boldness and some skill in map-reading, but the rewards of attending a good house concert are well worth it.  The Valley offers at least two series of house concerts this fall.

The roster of Bob Blue's Stone Soup Café in Amherst ranges from professional hall-fillers to unheralded locals.  Currently lined up are:

Help put on a concert

Pioneer Valley Folklore Society has a rich tradition of hosting quality folk performances.  In fact the organization was originally formed back in the spring of 1960 for the main purpose of putting on an Odetta concert at UMass.

Nowadays our main focus is the monthly Song & Story Swap at the Black Sheep, but we are occasionally greeted with an opportunity to produce a special event such as the upcoming Lou & Peter Berryman concert planned for Nov. 6 at the Unitarian Meetinghouse in Amherst.
