Bill Staines to give concert at the Nacul Center on May 11

Pioneer Valley Folklore Society is pleased to announce a special event — An Evening with Bill Staines.

Come hear Bill Staines in concert on May 11, 7pm at the Nacul Center in Amherst, Mass.It will take place on Sunday, May 11 , 7:00 p.m. at the The Nacul Center, 592 Main St., Amherst, Mass (see map). Admission is $12. Tickets may be purchased in advance at Food for Thought Books, 106 North Pleasant St., Amherst, or at the door on the night of the show.

This concert is in place of the Song & Story Swap regularly scheduled for the 2nd Sunday of the month.

For over forty years, Bill Staines has crisscrossed North America, bringing his songs to enthralled audiences and developing a reputation as a songwriter of the first order. A New England native, Bill became involved with the Boston-Cambridge folk scene in the early 1960's and for a time emceed the Sunday hootenanny at the renowned Club 47 in Cambridge. He quickly became one of the Boston area's most popular musicians, garnering a description by the Boston Phoenix as "simply Boston's best performer."  Now in his fifth decade as a concert artist, he has produced 22 albums and seen his songs covered by dozens of recording artists.

One of the greatest tributes to Bill Staines' songwriting has been how quickly many of his songs have entered the folk consciousness. "All God's Critters Got a Place in the Choir," which has been sung at summer camps by nine year olds and at Carnegie Hall, is often mis-credited, not to Bill, but to "Traditional."

In addition to original compositions, Bill Staines' repertoire includes songs ranging from traditional folk tunes to more contemporary country ballads, and he delights in having the audience participate in his numbers. He may even offer a yodeling tune or two, having won the National Yodeling Championship in 1975 at the Kerrville Folk Festival in Kerrville Texas.
